United States: As COVID-19 persistently evolves, it renders us increasingly vulnerable, as substantiated by emerging data.

Per the CDC, California’s wastewater has escalated to a “very high” echelon of COVID-19 viral activity, a peak unseen since the previous winter. States such as Arkansas, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, and Texas have similarly documented “very high” levels.

Los Angeles County’s Health Director, Dr Barbara Ferrer, corroborates this data, indicating that LA County is mirroring these findings, according to the reports by abc7.com.

“With the exception of mortality rates, which have remained consistent at approximately one fatality per day,” remarked Dr Ferrer. “All other metrics, including the number of cases, hospitalizations, and wastewater indicators, have doubled within the past month.”

Ferrer attributes the increased susceptibility and transmissibility to the novel FLiRT variant of COVID-19, though she underscores that vaccinations remain our most potent defense against severe illness.

She advocates for everyone aged six months and older to receive the new vaccine in the autumn, which will be tailored to counteract the latest variants.

“However, this recommendation does not extend to individuals aged 65 and older or those at higher risk,” Ferrer clarified. “These individuals should obtain the current vaccine now and then receive the updated dose in the fall,” as per abc7.com.

Ferrer notes that this is the fifth consecutive summer experiencing a surge in COVID-19 transmission, with the key difference being our improved arsenal to combat it.

Reportedly, she advised that during travel or in large gatherings, wearing masks and hand hygiene, especially before meals, are prudent measures.

“We have encountered this situation before and possess excellent tools for self-protection,” Ferrer emphasized. “Practical precautions are crucial, particularly for safeguarding those still highly susceptible to severe illness.”

Ferrer stresses the importance of being aware of one’s health status, especially for high-risk individuals. Free COVID resources remain accessible throughout the county, with information available at ph.lacounty.gov.
