United States: Scientists from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland have found that persons with body mass issues and drinking problems who used medications to lose weight reported 56 percent of no reoccurrence of alcohol use disorder in the consecutive year compared to those who did not use the drugs.

According to the lead researcher, Rong Xu, who is a professor of biomedical informatics at the Case Western’s School of Medicine stated, “This is very promising news in that we may have a new therapeutic method to treat alcohol use disorder,” as US News reported.

Thus, in the new study, Xu and her team reviewed records of nearly 84,000 patients with obesity attending an outpatient clinic.
On average, the risk of new-onset or recurrent alcohol use disorder was reduced by 50 percent to 56 percent in the individuals who took semaglutide when compared with the placebo group who did not take the med.
Similar results were observed in more than 600,000 individuals treated with semaglutide for diabetes, according to the Cleveland team.
The findings of the study were published in the Journal Nature Communications on May 28.
According to Xu, “While the findings are promising and provide preliminary evidence of the potential benefit of semaglutide in alcohol use disorder in real-world populations, further randomized clinical trials are needed to support its use” while talking about curbing the drinking practice.
