United States – The supporters of the recall of the Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, for his opposition to Donald Trump, former president, confirmed over the weekend that they had collected enough signatures for the recall to be held.
Demand for New Representation
Backers of the recall campaign plan to present signatures Monday to the Elections Commission of Wisconsin, saying they have more than the necessary 6,850 signatures from voters in the south-eastern district of Vos, as reported by The Associated Press.
“With more than 10,000 signatures on our recall petition, they’ve said it loud and clear: they’re tired of the status quo and demand new representation,” Matt Snorek, who started the campaign in January, said in a statement.
Vos, for his part, has described the recall attempt as a waste of money and resources, which he reemphasized during his statement on Sunday. He disputed the gang’s tactics and the validity of the signatures, promising that a team he had gathered would “evaluate each individual signature.”
Vos’ Response and Dispute
The recall campaign against Vos serves as a stark reminder of the lingering discontent among Trump’s supporters in the battleground state of Wisconsin. This discontent stems from the outcome of the 2020 election and Vos’ subsequent actions. This includes the rejection of Trump and his supporters’ attempts to invalidate Biden’s win and Vos’ decision not to proceed with the impeachment of Wisconsin’s top elections official.
Trump succeeded in taking the heights of Wisconsin in 2016, but in 2020, he was narrowly defeated by a margin of about 21 thousand votes, just like Joe Biden. This led to an echo audit, two partial recounts, many legal cases, and a review by an outside conservative law firm.
Political Fallout
The statement of the recall campaign was announced on Sunday as the Wisconsin Supreme Court refused to take up the request of the Democratic governor, Tony Evers, from Friday to address the topic of whether voters of Vos’ new district will utilize the new legislative district map in the running election, on which the uncertainty remains, so the signatures had not yet been collected.
Per Sunkerin, in their current district work, the court’s decision for them to conclude is correct, as reported by The Associated Press.
First, Vos was elected in 2004 and has the longest service term as Assembly speaker in state history so far, having held the post since 2013.
