The probiotic supplements, claim to have a friendly type of bacteria called Akkermansia muciniphila.

In a recent study, it was found that the majority of people have Akkermansia muciniphila in their digestive system. However, there are particular differences, depending from person to person, where few possess more of it while others have less. According to scientists, the former are incredibly lucky because this microbe is directly associated with their well-being.

Research has shown that people who possess high levels of akkermansia can actually gain less weight, develop less number of obesity-related diseases, and develop metabolic diseases as well. Research also suggests that people with low levels of this gut microbe are less healthy.

About the recent study

One of the scientific papers that looked at its impact on health last year described akkermansia as the ‘shining star of the gut flora. ‘ Other experts have labeled it as a ‘next generation’ probiotic that could help with certain chronic diseases, as the Washington Post reported.

Small trials have also revealed that aakkermania supplement intake was effective in reducing the blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes and reducing inflammation in the overweight or obese population.

It also opens a floodgate of ingenious akkermansia-based oddball probiotics and whatnot found in supermarkets and chemists today. At the moment, there is one company that stands out from all the rest in this particular niche and it is Pendulum from the USA, San Francisco specifically.

According to Colleen Cutcliffe, who co-founded Pendulum and]its CEO, Akkermansia is not like the standard probiotics that are familiar to many people as a result of consuming fermented foods and supplements like lacto bacteria and bifidobacteria.

These species of friendly bacteria are known to attend to digestive problems such as diarrhea, bloating, and constipation, not forgetting the next-generation probiotics such as akkermansia which are significant in things such as appetite, weight, and metabolic health according to Cutcliffe
